What is Featured snippet?
A featured snippet is the box above the regular search results in which Google pulls a direct answer from a web page: a paragraph, a list, a table, sometimes a video - always with a link to the source. You cannot buy the position. Google selects the page that answers the question most clearly, almost always from the first ten organic results. Whoever wins the snippet also overtakes results that would otherwise rank ahead of them.
The box is won with structure, not keyword density: the question verbatim as a subheading, directly below it a compact answer in two to four sentences, then the depth for everyone who reads on. Step-by-step questions are answered by a numbered list, comparison questions by a table - Google adopts the format you provide. This is exactly the pattern the algorithm checks mechanically, which is why a cleanly structured page beats the better-written but unstructured one almost every time.
The honest part is its double character: a featured snippet delivers maximum visibility but no guarantee of clicks - whoever reads the answer in the box no longer needs your page. And AI overviews are increasingly taking over the answer box's role. Neither argues against optimising; both argue for it: the snippet-ready structure - question, compact answer, evidence - is precisely the format AI systems prefer to cite.
Why does Featured snippet matter?
According to Semrush's AI Overviews study (over 10 million keywords, updated December 2025), Google's AI summaries appeared on 15.69 per cent of searches in November 2025 - after peaking at 24.61 per cent in July. For the large majority of searches, the featured snippet therefore remains the most visible organic position. And the structure that wins snippets is the same one AI answers cite as a source - one optimisation, two channels.
Featured snippet in practice
- 01A tax advisory firm answers 'How much does an accountant cost?' in one clear paragraph directly beneath the heading - Google pulls exactly that paragraph as the snippet, placing the firm above every competitor.
- 02A tutorial structures 'How to create a WordPress backup' as a numbered list of steps - the snippet shows the first steps plus the source link, and the page wins the clicks of everyone who needs the details.
- 03A software vendor presents the feature comparison of two plans as an HTML table - Google adopts the table as a snippet for comparison searches, price column included.
