What is SERP features?
SERP features are the building blocks of a Google results page beyond the classic ten links: the featured answer box, the AI overview, the local map pack, the image and video rows, the shopping row, the "people also ask" block, sitelinks under your entry. Each of these takes up space, and it takes it at the top. The organic results slide down accordingly. Two pages holding the same position can therefore be visible to a completely different degree, depending on what sits above them.
Which features appear is decided by the query, not by you. A question starting with "how" triggers different blocks than a product name or a query with a location in it. So the first step is always an inventory: enter your 20 most important queries and note which blocks actually show up. Only then is optimising worthwhile, because every feature demands a different format. The answer box wants a question plus a compact answer, the map pack wants a maintained business profile, the shopping row wants a clean product data feed, the video row wants a video.
The honest part: a feature you win is visibility, not a click. Whoever reads the answer in the box does not have to click through. And the composition of the results page keeps changing, sometimes within a few months. SERP features are therefore not a project with an end date but a recurring measurement. They also need separating from the AI answer itself: a featured snippet quotes one page verbatim, an AI overview rewrites from several sources.
Why does SERP features matter?
How fast the composition shifts is shown by an Ahrefs analysis from March 2026 across 863,000 keyword SERPs: YouTube is now the single most cited domain in Google's AI overviews, at 5.6 per cent of all citations and up 34 per cent within six months. A format many small businesses never touch is therefore taking a growing share of the space. Anyone watching only their own position will not see that shift.
SERP features in practice
- 01A trades business ranks third organically, with an AI overview and a map pack above it - it only becomes visible two screen heights down, even though the position looks healthy.
- 02A law firm checks its 20 most important queries and finds that 14 of them show a "people also ask" block - that becomes the outline of the reworked service page.
- 03A retailer does not appear in the shopping row because its product feed omits the product identifier - the page itself ranks perfectly well.
