What is AEO?
Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) is the practice of shaping content so it is served directly as the answer - in a featured snippet, a voice-assistant reply, or an AI-generated summary. The goal is not a place in a list of links but to be the answer itself.
AEO and GEO overlap heavily but weight things differently: GEO thinks from the generative model outward (ChatGPT, Perplexity), while AEO is broader - any machine that returns a single answer, including Google's featured snippets and voice search. In practice both lead to the same craft rule: answer the question precisely and self-containedly at the top of the page.
Format decides: a clearly worded definition, a direct answer in two or three sentences, clean question-and-answer blocks, and schema markup that tells the machine which paragraph is the answer. Write this way and you become the preferred source - while tangled prose gets passed over.
Why does AEO matter?
Answer engines usually show one answer, not ten. Second place effectively does not exist there - either your answer is taken or the competitor's is. Per the Princeton study, evidenced statistics and quotations lift the chance of being taken by 30 to 40 per cent.
AEO in practice
- 01A page opening with a clear „X is ..." sentence is pulled as a featured snippet more often than one with a long preamble.
- 02FAQ blocks with `FAQPage` schema answer the question directly in search - and in the voice assistant.
- 03„What is the difference between SEO and GEO?" is answered by ChatGPT with a short definition - the page with the cleanest distinction gets cited.
