Semantic search

Search that matches on meaning rather than on strings, which is why your page can appear for a phrasing that never occurs on it.

What is Semantic search?

Classic search compares words, semantic search compares meanings. Texts and queries are translated into number sequences that represent proximity in a meaning space. "How do I get fewer dead enquiries" therefore lands close to "lead qualification", even though not a single word matches.

This shifts the work on the text. A term no longer has to appear in every spelling variant, it has to be treated clearly and completely. Repetition, on the other hand, helps very little: if ten pages carry the same meaning, they compete with each other instead of reinforcing each other.

Two things matter in practice. First, self-contained units of sense: a paragraph that answers one question completely and stays comprehensible without the rest of the page is the unit a system can lift out and cite. Second, unambiguity: the more clearly a page points at one entity and one question, the more reliably it is attributed.

Why does Semantic search matter?

According to Seer Interactive's analysis of 5.47 million queries, queries in question format trigger an AI Overview in 85.9 per cent of cases, against 27.3 per cent for single-word queries. So if people search for you in whole questions, they are mostly answered by a system that selects on meaning, not by a list sorted on word matches.

Semantic search in practice

  1. 01A page about lead qualification appears for "have enquiries pre-sorted" without those words being on it.
  2. 02A paragraph that contains a full definition gets cited in an AI answer while the rest of the page goes unread.
  3. 03Two near-identical guides on the same topic take visibility from each other because they occupy the same meaning.
