Editorial Calendar

The binding schedule of which piece appears when and on which channel, and who has it ready by then.

What is Editorial Calendar?

An editorial calendar holds four things per entry: topic, channel, date and the person responsible. Everything beyond that is comfort. What matters is not the tool but that the plan is binding: a date without a name next to it is a statement of intent, not a plan.

The benefit lies less in tidiness than in pre-production. If you know a piece on a given topic goes out in three weeks, you can start the research earlier, request the client case in time and design the derived formats alongside it. Without a plan every piece is produced under deadline pressure, and deadline pressure produces what is quick rather than what works.

Realistic planning runs backwards from capacity, not forwards from ambition. Two well-sourced pieces a month that reliably appear beat eight announced ones of which three ship. A plan that gets missed regularly does more damage than no plan, because it trains the team to miss it.

Why does Editorial Calendar matter?

Resource constraints across time, people and budget are the second biggest challenge in the CMI B2B report, named by 39 per cent of respondents. A calendar does not create resources, it distributes them: it turns irregular sprints into predictable work and shows you that you have overcommitted before the month does.

Editorial Calendar in practice

  1. 01A two-person team plans one core piece per month and derives four social posts and a newsletter from it, all scheduled with dates and names at the start of the month.
  2. 02An agency enters recycling slots as their own entries instead of scrambling on publication day.
  3. 03An online shop schedules seasonal content six weeks before the occasion so it is indexed in time for the search season rather than in the middle of it.
