Content Audit

A systematic inventory of everything you have published: what performs, what has aged, what should go, and what deserves a second format.

What is Content Audit?

A content audit is stocktaking with a verdict attached. You list every published piece and judge each one against the same criteria: performance (reach, dwell time, enquiries), currency (do the figures, prices and legal positions still hold), substance (is there an original thought in it) and role (which search intent does this page serve). What comes out is not a list, it is a decision per entry.

Four decisions are enough: keep, update, merge, delete. Merging is the one most often missed. When three of your own pages serve the same topic in the same words, they compete for the same query and none of them wins it cleanly. Deleting is the second most important, because a library of thin pages drags the strong pages down rather than the other way round.

The audit is also the only reliable basis for reuse. Without an inventory you recycle the newest piece instead of the best one. The interesting candidates are pieces with good dwell time and weak reach: the substance is there and the format is at fault.

Why does Content Audit matter?

In the Content Marketing Institute B2B report (fielded in summer 2025, 1,015 marketers analysed) only 12 per cent rate their own content marketing as highly effective, while 40 per cent name creating content that prompts a desired action as their biggest challenge. Without an audit you do not know which of your pages sits in which group, and you keep optimising on a hunch.

Content Audit in practice

  1. 01A consultant sorts 60 blog articles into four columns and finds that 18 of them serve the same topic in slight variations. She merges them into three strong pages.
  2. 02A trades business finds four pages quoting 2023 prices. Here the fastest gain in trust is an update, not a new article.
  3. 03A SaaS team flags pages with good dwell time and weak reach as recycling candidates and turns them into newsletter and social formats the following month.
