Lead Generation

Nurture Sequence

A defined series of messages and tasks with a trigger, a goal and an exit - built so that interest turns into a decision step by step.

What is Nurture Sequence?

Three terms that often blur into each other: `lead nurturing` is the discipline of developing contacts over time instead of pitching them cold once. A `drip campaign` is the simplest mechanic for it, a time-based series that follows its calendar no matter what. The nurture sequence is the concrete building block in between: a named series with a defined trigger (guide downloaded, contract signed, 90 days inactive), a defined goal (call booked, project ready to start, account active again) and a defined exit. Whoever reaches the goal leaves the sequence instead of receiving messages that no longer fit.

A good sequence is not just emails. It mixes messages, internal tasks and deliberate waiting periods: a message to the contact, a task for sales, three days of pause, the next step only if no reply came. In terms of content it follows a simple logic: every element answers the next question the recipient has anyway, rather than sending the next message the sender wants to get out. That is why building a sequence starts with the list of those questions, not in the tool.

Sequences do not end at the purchase. The welcome and onboarding track after signature is technically the same thing: trigger contract start, goal project running, in between confirmation, access checklist, kick-off booking and reminders. The most common construction fault is not the start but the afterwards: sequences someone built two years ago that nobody has read since. The practical rule: every sequence has an owner and a fixed date on which it is checked against the last twenty runs.

Why does Nurture Sequence matter?

The billing platform Recurly notes in its churn benchmarks (as of July 2026) that poor onboarding is the single biggest driver of voluntary cancellations. The most important sequence is therefore often not the one before the signature but the one after it: the track from the yes to the first visible result.

Nurture Sequence in practice

  1. 01A guide download starts a sequence of three emails: the promised file immediately, the use case two days later, the booking offer after five days - whoever books exits automatically.
  2. 02An agency starts an onboarding sequence with the signature: welcome message within 24 hours, access checklist on day 2, kick-off booking, a reminder after three days without a response.
  3. 03A software provider reactivates accounts after 90 days of inactivity with a three-step sequence and ends it at the first login rather than on schedule.
