What is CRO?
Conversion rate optimisation (CRO) is the structured process of increasing the share of visitors who complete a goal on your website - sending an enquiry, booking an appointment, buying. Instead of buying more traffic, the existing traffic is put to better use: form a hypothesis, build the change, measure the effect.
The distinction from the metric matters: the conversion rate is the measurement, CRO is the discipline behind it. The toolkit includes A/B tests, user observation, form analytics, sharper value propositions and removing friction from the funnel - from a confusing menu to a form with twelve mandatory fields.
CRO is not a gut-feeling redesign: a concrete change is tested against a measurable hypothesis, and many tests fail - which is precisely why the process matters. Honesty helps too: sites with little traffic can rarely test with statistical rigour. There, qualitative methods and proven standards beat significance theatre.
Why does CRO matter?
According to a Semrush study, visitors from AI search convert 4.4 times better than traditional organic visitors - traffic overall is becoming scarcer and more valuable per visit. If you fail to convert these expensive visits, you pay twice: for the visibility and for the lost enquiry.
CRO in practice
- 01A consultancy cuts its contact form from nine fields to four - enquiries rise without a single additional visitor.
- 02An online shop tests two product page variants against each other and keeps the one that measurably drives more purchases - not the one the team likes better.
- 03An agency defines exactly one primary action per page (book an appointment) instead of five competing buttons - the decision load on visitors drops.
