Server-side tagging

Measurement no longer runs in the visitor's browser but through your own server - technically more robust, legally unchanged.

What is Server-side tagging?

In the classic setup the browser loads a separate script for every tool and sends the data straight to each vendor. With server-side tagging it only makes a lean call to an address on your own domain. A container on your server receives the event, decides what becomes of it and distributes it to the destinations. The browser therefore sees one vendor instead of ten.

Three effects are real. The page gets faster because fewer third-party scripts run in the browser. Measurement gets more complete because ad blockers and browser protections bite less, and cookies set server-side survive longer than those written from JavaScript. And you decide which fields a vendor gets to see at all, rather than handing over the whole stream.

The costs are just as real. The container is infrastructure that runs, costs money and needs maintenance, usually as a cloud service billed per request. Setting it up is not an afternoon's work, and debugging moves from the browser console into server logs. For small sites the effort rarely matches the gain.

Why does Server-side tagging matter?

Server-side tagging moves the plumbing, not the legal position. Section 25(1) TDDDG and section 165(3) TKG 2021 attach to storing information on the device and accessing it, not to where the container runs. Measuring server-side requires exactly the same consent as before - the difference is that rejected measurement now genuinely has to stop, because control sits with you rather than with a vendor's script.

Server-side tagging in practice

  1. 01A shop moves purchase tracking to its own server: orders previously swallowed by ad blockers reappear, and the loading score of the product page improves measurably.
  2. 02A B2B provider strips the email address out of the form event inside the container before it reaches the ad network - what is measured is that a form was sent, not by whom.
  3. 03A small service business runs the numbers and stays with the browser container: at 4,000 visits a month, ongoing server costs stand against a measurement gain of a few per cent.
