Local citation

Any mention of a business name, address and phone number on someone else's site, from a trade directory to a story in the local paper.

What is Local citation?

A local citation is a mention of your business with its core details outside your own channels. There are two kinds. Structured citations sit in fields: trade directories, map services, review platforms, chamber and association listings. Unstructured citations sit in running text: a story in the local paper, a recommendation on a blog, an entry in a list of the best businesses in town.

For classic map search, structured citations have lost weight. There they mainly serve as confirmation: search engines reconcile the details to be sure that address and phone number are right. A wrong citation therefore does more harm than a missing one. Google may publish a suggested edit to your Business Profile if other publicly available information supports it, and an old address in a forgotten directory is exactly that kind of information.

For visibility in AI search the picture is reversed. There, unstructured mentions on credible sites are among the strongest signals, because language models know businesses from text, not from form fields. In practice: maintain a few correct structured listings, track down and fix the wrong ones, and put the rest of your effort into mentions someone writes of their own accord.

Why does Local citation matter?

In Whitespark's Local Search Ranking Factors 2026 study, published on 6 November 2025 and based on the assessment of 47 experts across 187 factors, consistent details on Google Maps, Bing Maps and Apple Maps rank 28th for map results, consistency on key directories 63rd and on data aggregators 85th. For visibility in AI search, mentions rank right at the top: first is inclusion in expert-curated best-of lists, fourth the quality of unstructured citations.

Local citation in practice

  1. 01A plumber appears in the guild's member list, in a trade directory and in a district newspaper story about his apprentices: two structured citations and one unstructured.
  2. 02After a practice moves, a forgotten medical directory keeps serving the old address and so backs up every user report that tries to put it back into the profile.
  3. 03Before a relaunch, a business checks its ten most important citations against its master data sheet instead of creating fifty new listings.
