Lead Generation

Lead Magnet

A concrete piece of value - a guide, a template, a calculator - traded for an email address. What separates it from merely good content: a lead magnet does not explain a problem, it finishes part of one.

What is Lead Magnet?

A lead magnet is what someone receives in exchange for their contact details: a guide, a template, a calculator, a checklist. The mechanic underneath is a trade, and the trade has to be worth it for the other side. An email address costs more today than it did ten years ago, because everybody knows what happens next.

The decisive difference from merely good content is not quality but state: good content changes what someone knows. A lead magnet changes what someone has - a filled-in template, a number, a decision, a list that did not exist before. That is why most of them fail in exactly two ways. Either the promise solves a problem the reader does not have: the 40-page industry report is impressive and answers no question anybody is asking today. Or it solves one the reader still has after downloading: the text describes neatly what ought to be done and leaves the reader with the same task they arrived with. That is not help, that is homework.

The second underrated lever is narrowness. A lead magnet for a clearly defined group beats the universal one, because the value of an address depends on whose it is, not on how many you have. A guide for practices with two to five employees filters harder than a `digitalisation guide 2026`, and that is precisely the point: anybody who feels addressed by it is already pre-qualified. A useful test before writing: what does this person do in the ten minutes after the download, and is that step the beginning of what you sell?

Why does Lead Magnet matter?

Lead magnets are almost always judged by the wrong number. Downloads are cheap and say nothing - what counts is how many of those contacts end up in a conversation. Optimising for download volume pushes you towards the broadest, least committal promise, because that collects the most clicks, and it gathers exactly the addresses nothing ever happens with.

Lead Magnet in practice

  1. 01agentsie puts a 10-page guide under every blog article in exchange for a first name and an email address: the four routes to predictable enquiries. It answers the question people arrive with anyway, not the one we would most enjoy answering.
  2. 02An accountant replaces the `digitalisation checklist` with a template that already has next year's deadlines filled in: same audience, but after the download a task is done rather than described.
  3. 03The list grows and nobody books: the magnet attracts students and competitors instead of buyers. The answer is not a bigger channel but a narrower promise.
